Tuscan Kitchen Paint Faux Finish

Houston… we have a problem. I got a call for help from someone who wants to do a Tuscan kitchen paint faux finish, but has wallpaper she doesn't want to strip.. She wants to paint over the wallpaper! Want to see what her kitchen looks like now? Read on…

I want to do a tuscan look in my kitchen and have wallpaper that is so very busy and I certainly do not want to remove it already have had to remove wallpaper in 5 rooms…ouch!!!

My floor is blue and counter is blue cabinet white and living rom is a very light yellow.  I have white chair rail and crown molding thru-out.

I was planning on painting a dark blue on the bottom half and a yellow tuscan look on the top.  I am overwhelmed at this point and would love some advice!!!! Can you help…

I asked for pictures and she sent a bunch of them and this response:

I am so impressed with the ultra quick response…I tried to get pics to give you an idea…I really would like to keep the white trim…beast to paint and it flows into the living room which is the pale yellow.

The wallpaper is just so busy with the blue counter and the blue floor.  I had to replace the faucet and went with Moen oil rubbed bronze.  More rusty/bronzy than black.  I am redoing the knobs to match and they are turning out really cool.

If you can help me with the colors I will be forever in your debt.  I originally was thinking of doing a texture with joint compound and paint on top with variations in the color for the top
half and leaving the blue on the bottom (changing to paint of course).

She asked for a Tuscan look orginally and this is how I responded:

Tuscan is going to be a tough one in this room. So much blue and white!

I defiantly would not do two colors in this room. I would suggest that you ignore the fact that you have chair railing… kind of put it out of your mind and treat the bottom and top half of the walls the same.

Oh… gotta cover that wallpaper… YIKES.

Such a pretty room for all that busy wallpaper.

I know you love the idea of yellow in your kitchen, but I think that it would look much better with a tan/brown.

The floor actually looks like it has a nice taupe color in the background of it. Get yourself to the paint store and pick out a bunch of taupe/ tan/ light brown paint chips… and then throw them on the
floor and see which one you like best with the tile.

The taupe color is going to look amazing with your white woodwork.

Then the fabrics in your room should be patterned with a Tuscan theme
that picks up the taupe/white/blue.

See it's all good!

I've lost the rest of the conversation I had… :( but I remember that Tuscan was not really the way she wanted to go… More Country French.

But… yes, you can paint over wallpaper… And yellow would look okay. But what about using the same green that is in the fabric you already have… this green and blue is working really nice already. And… would look good with the soft yellow paint color that you are using in the living room.
