Redecorating Little Girls Room – Not So Little

by THAT Painter Lady on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

How do you go about redecorating little girls room for a not so little girl? 13 years and not a little girl but not yet a young women… she still has her own taste. What's the answer?

I got an email from just such a girl… with a plea for help:

Hi!

I have a question that I would love you to answer.

I am a 13yr old girl and I am planing to do up my room. We live in a Queendslander and I happen to have the smallest room room in the house. It is verrry small.

There is a lot of sunlight in the morning but in the late afternoon it is a bit dull. There are many windows on two of my walls.

I have wooden floors and blinds and deep blue curtains (although the curtains can be changed).

I am 13yrs old so I don't want something too old or too  young and I absolutly love coulorful things.

I was thinking that maby I should have nutral colours for my walls with a bit of highlights or something in a colour.

What would you recomend as a colour scheme or maybe some acessories? please help me! have a good weekend.
thank you for your time! SARAH

Hey Sarah, as always… I am here to help.

The assignment for today is to help you choose a color scheme that is light, bright and cheerful. Also, it should be filled with a bit of colorful whimsy.

The floors and blinds are wood and the current curtains currently are deep blue.

First… the things we can not change are the floors and blinds. So we know we have wood as a color. Really… this is actually a color we need to keep in mind. Taking the assumption that the wood is medium in tone… and yellow in coloration… We know that a dark Yellow or Med. Brown color is in the room.

If the floors are Medium Brown or chocolate in nature… then blue is a good modern choice. Blue will not be dated in style very soon…. so let's go with that:

And if your walls are white you could add these cute Dots to the wall:

See how the powder blue and the chocolate brown work well together? This room is light and bright… but with a touch of colorful whimsy. We've hit this one dead on!

What if you are tired of blue? Well… the yellow tones of the wood will go well with green. But… it needs to be a modern girl green… not some boy color green.

The walls are white and the furniture is green… but this could be a cute room also if the walls are green and the furniture painted white. Oh… and you must have the cute dog as well! :)

Need ideas for how to paint over wood furniture

This room focuses on golden yellow and salmon colored accessories. What do you think? I think I like helping redecorating little girls room.
