Quick Tip For Home Decorators – From A Reader

by THAT Painter Lady

Questions From ReadersI am always on the lookout for great tips for painting projects.

I got this great tip for all you home decorators from a reader… Thanks Kathy!

Really this is such a good idea.

Kathy must have recently had some remodeling done … I guessed because she had leftover drywall.

(on a side note… it's amazing the great ideas that you will come up with for using remodeling leftovers if you just keep a keen eye. It takes a little practice… an bit more storage, but it is worth it.)

Realizing the gold mine she had, she saved them and cut them up into pieces.

One of the drywall pieces is now painted with the base coat color used in her home.  This way when she decides to try a faux finish on the walls… she can practice on the drywall and it already has the base coat on it! What a great idea.

And with another piece of drywall… she is painting in sections with the colors on the walls of her bedroom. This gives her a nice sample board of colors she already has. Now when she goes shopping for accessories or furniture she can take this board with her. Just stand it up next to the piece in question and step back. She will immediately know if the item will be perfect or clash.

This is the kind of tip that really is a gem! I am sure some of you that read this blog often… have some tips of your own. Won't you share them with everyone?

Greetings All!

My Mother and I have always kept spare “swatch bags” in our vehicles. We used to carry paint chips and then realized they were too small to really tell when comparing our current paint colors to accessories and furnishings. We finally came up with what we think is perfect and reasonably compact for shopping trips. We use the largest ziplock freezer bags available and have painted full size sheets of cardstock with our paint colors on them. We tried blowing them up via our scanner and printed them out first. That did not work. It’s very hard to get an exact match using a scanner and printer. So, we ended up painting 8×10 pieces of Matte cardstock. It’s durable and large enough to get a better idea than a paint chip when looking at stuff. They fit easily into the oversized freezer bags. That way you can have not only your paint samples but your fabric samples and photos of your surfaces as well. I carry all of my room dimensions layed out like a blue print that I did in a simple desktop publishing program as well. It all fits into that one freezer bag. I keep it in my car at all times because you never know when you might need to make a quick decision on something for your home!
