Questions From Readers

Do you want to remodel your kitchen adding new granite counters? Don't we all?

It just isn't in the budget at this point… someday I will have it all!

In the meantime… it's time to get those creative juices going and jazz up our kitchens before the holidays with faux granite. A little paint can go along way in this project!

Here are the latest Faux Granite Painting Questions:

I'm thinking about following your advise and painting over my Formica counters.  Do I need to sand them first?  Also what colors would you use for a popular granite color that incorporates black and some yellow?
Thank you so much
Lucie

 Hey Lucie… glad you asked!

You should sand a bit… no hard labor for any of THAT Painter Lady's' girls. Lightly sand with a palm sander or by hand. Use a fine grit sandpaper. This will not only give the counter some tooth to grab the paint, but will ensue the counter doesn't have any greasy or chunky spots.

Then Clean… Clean and clean again with TSP or some other good industrial strength cleaner.

Prime… yes you must Prime! I am using a primer made by Zinsser that bonds to plastic.

The colors for popular granite?   Black with speckles of gold, gray and deep pumpkin or deep green.  I would throw on some mica sprinkles with your first coat of sealer. This really adds to the drama! Just a little twinkle of shimmer sprinkled on like fairy dust will add to the realism.

What fun!  I am getting ready to tape a full video for sale about the painting of Formica to look like granite or marble.  Stay tuned for that announcement.

And… I just recieved this short question:

Can I paint my counter tops? They are mauve color and really look bad. What can I do to change their appearance?

Victoria Larsen recently wrote about another faux granite painting on Formica counters… success story.  You won't believe how this gal changed her mauve kitchen counters into luxurious black granite counters with just Primer, Paint and Sealer!

Just a quick thanks for including my blog on your blog. I love showing new, interesting ways to decorate our homes with out a lot of expense or knowledge.
You and I are on the same page!
Your contributions to the homeowner are wonderful and your blog is certainly one of my favorites!
I’m off to our home in Idaho to do two more counter tops. How fun!
Happy Holidays,

Victoria Larsen
