Kitchen Painting Ideas Choosing Colors

kitchen painting ideasHi there Debra - I have a problem trying to find a colour for my kitchen. I need a few kitchen painting ideas.

The kitchen cabinets are a yellow - almost orangeish oak (similar to the picture asking about the Tuscan faux finish), the appliances are white, the tile is beige with hints of dark brown and the countertop is a dark grey with flecks of salmon (or pink) and other shades of grey.

Can’t Fail Color Schemes for Kitchens & Baths: How to Choose Color for Stone and Tile Surfaces, Cabinets, & Walls

I’ve tried painting it a terracotta colour - however most people that have come by said that the colour looks too red for the cupboards.

It’s a great colour on the kitchen wall with no cupboards but next to the cabinets it does look more red than orange. The kitchen is next to the family room which is a pale beige (more white than brown). I’m a fan of orange however I’m afraid the colour I pick will make the kitchen cupboards disappear. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help ~ Sharon

How about a few paint color suggestions for your kitchen from Tawn?

Hi there!

My goodness it sounds like you have a lot going on in your kitchen! :-) I’ll bet you love it! Okay, so here are the colors I got from your inquiry:

Cabinets: yellow/orange

Tile: beige, dark brown

Countertops: dark grey, salmon/pink, various shades of grey

With all of those in there together I’d go with a Sage color to tie them in and make the cupboards look good.

I know you said you are a fan of orange but you already went with terracotta and people didn’t like it or said it was toooo red.

If you want to stick with the terracotta but you think it’s to red as well, you could just try adding some more yellow to it to lighten it up (make it more orange) or even some brown to brown tone it down and make it more “burnt”.

OR…another thing you could do if you like the terracotta but just not next to the cupboards you could just faux finish the walls by washing some brown over those walls..the ones that the cabinets are on.

Leaving any walls without cabinets the terracotta color you like. :-)

OR -faux finish with brown over all the walls and tone down your terracotta completely and make it more complementary to the cupboards and have all the walls the same.

Hope this helps with some kitchen painting ideas! That Painter Lady - Tawn

Debra, I’d like your advice on this: I want to paint my kitchen using a couple of different blue green hues (teal and a shade or two lighter). My counter will be the speckled corian (light blue but specks of teal, white and black). The cabinets are dark brown. I would like to have the main wall in my dining area the darkest teal with some sort of texture and then the rest of the kitchen a lighter shade. I also have white tiles above the stove and around the sink area. I want to cover my patio doors with the dark brown wood verticals as I also have the dark brown paneling half way up to chair rail level. Do you think these dark hues are too much? I thought I would be a little more sutble with the flooring, blending the brown and just a hint of the blue. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Oh, no, I don’t think it sounds ‘too much’. I love the richness the jewel tone will give you. The only thing you need to make sure of is that you have plenty of light in the room to keep it from becoming to cave like. When you are done, please send a picture and share.
