It’s that time of year… college bound kids all want to know how to decorate a dorm room. Do you remember what it was like to leave home and want to take all your personal treasures with you? Or… did you want a completely new look – something totally different from any decorating scheme you had at home?
When I headed off to college (back in the day) – I thought I was lucky because my mom let me choose a new comforter for the twin bed in my shared dorm room. I eventually talked my mom into buying a small refrigerator as well. This room is where I learned to cook grill cheese “samiches” with an iron… but that’s another story.
When my son went off to college – I never gave any thought to “decorating” his dorm room. Isn’t a dorm room for study and sleep? Okay… so I didn’t “get” it…
I knew you couldn’t paint anything – walls or furniture. I am all about paint – so what could I do? The walls are going to be stark white or beige. The window treatments will be minimal… and the furniture is going to be BLAND. It’s enough to drive any student crazy!
As it turns out… my college bound son has graduated and one of the jobs he has had over the years is Dorm Administrator. My son has seen it all when it comes to decorating dorm rooms. Of course – the girls rooms tend to be more colorful (and neater) than the boys rooms. Boys tend to want a “man cave”.
Two Most Important Dorm Room Decorating Ideas
1. More Space
2 More Seating
The first thing that is usually looked at by new college dorm room students – how to get more space. The bed goes up as high as it can go… and dressers or desks are shoved under.
The very next idea is to find more seating. Spreading out on the bead or sitting in a desk chair isn’t going to cut it. Your kids will want to find some cool Dorm Room Chair ideas.
Posters, colorful bedding, rugs and lamps all help to make a room more comfortable. Of course – sending a staple gun and a few strings of Christmas lights will go a long way in decorating a dorm room.

Great tips! I especially like the idea of raising the bed as high as it can go to put stuff underneath — never would have thought of that!
