Holiday Guests First Impression Is The Floor

by THAT Painter Lady

One of the most important tips I ever got from a “real” interior designer is ” First time visitors to your home look at the floor first”. Now that was a real shock!

I spend so much time thinking about walls… as any THAT Painter Lady would… that the floors are often second or third in my mind when I am in the “decorating” mood.

I’ll explain why this happens:

When you are entering someplace unfamiliar... you “always” look before you walk. You look to see if their is a good – safe – place to walk. It’s just natural. It’s in our genes.

Say for instance… you drive up and park in front of a home you have never been to before… or rarely visit. You take in the entire house… looking for the entrance. It may seem obvious where the entrance is to you (the homeowner), but we all take in the entire house front, just to make sure we are correct that this is the front entrance.

We then walk up to the front entrance. While we are walking… we are watching the path we are “going” to take to get to the entrance. Before we look for the door bell… or check out the cute decorations around the entry… we are looking at exactly where our feet have to land to navigate the space.

So… What’s on the “floor” at your front door? I don’t mean inside… I mean outside. Where your first time visitor is going to stand and look before he/she knocks on the door or “peeks through the window”.

I was at a friends house the other day. I visit her quite often… but on this occasion I had to “go to the front door”. She had the classiest looking door mat I’d ever seen.

It looks just like wrought iron but it’s “Rubber”. How cool is that??? It’s black -black and looks very classy. I have ton’s of iron around my house – being into the whole Spanish Style Decorating thing and all. So this is perfect.

I went home and looked at my door mat. Yuck! I am so ordering a new Iron Look Door Mat today!
