Faux Finish Painting On Textured Walls

Hello. Thank you so much for your tips! I can already tell you saved me some time by avoiding things I did not know.

I do have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with:

I textured (slap stick/brush) the bathroom walls last year to match the original bedroom walls and it was impossible to match and I’m trying to find a painting technique that will distract that they are not exactly the same.

(From Dawn) What in the world is “slap stick/brush”? I have never heard of this term before.

It is what a guy at the paint store called it one time when I brought a picture of our texture. It is a brush that looks kinda like broom bristles and the it is flattened out and you apply texture with it.

I just put new mud over the texture, then sanded and primed and painted. I decided it would definitely look better on a flat wall rather than a texture wall. It came out great and thank you so much for your tips on your website.

I believe I’m going to be using the sponge on or off method with the glaze. Is it best to do this technique on smooth walls? Or if I do it on textured walls, will the texture stand out? Because that is what I’m trying to avoid.

This is a tough question. Without seeing a picture of the texture finish on your walls. I am not 100% sure if sponging will cause the texture to stand out. You might want to try it out on a small section of your wall to see what the outcome will be.

I understand that the base coat should not be flat, but can you mix the glaze with flat?

I like to use eggshell as opposed to flat paint to mix with my glaze.

I want to create a soft look and want to know if it would look good if I paint the base one color and then mix that SAME color with the glaze. Would that work?

Sure, you can do that, but you can also just choose colors that are closer on the color chart swatch. Try it out on sample boards to see what colors you like best.

I would really appreciate any advice you can give me regarding my questions.

Thank you,
Laurie Black
