Thank you for helping us "wanna be" painters.
I have a rectangle shaped living/dining room. It is all burgundy paint. I would love to put some kind of finish on it that would change it a bit, make it more up to date, without a complete repaint.
I just bought new furniture (a light tan colour) and my trim is white.
Thank you
Hi… thank you for the compliment!
Now… let's see if I can't help you with a faux finish over burgundy paint.
As I don't know how much natural light comes into the living - dining room… we will suppose it is medium. This means that you probable have windows at either end of your long room… so light is coming in from each end, but doesn't penetrate with bright light into the center.
The color theme in your room now is burgundy and light tan. If all the walls are painted with the burgundy color… then this is the most predominant color. The furniture in the light tan color is the second most predominant color.
So… in theory we would be looking for a complimentary color to use for our triangle of color theme. But… the one problem is that their are very limited colors that can go over the burgundy color.
Do not… please… put anything light or white over the burgundy. It will come out pink and I'm sure that no one wants a pink dining or living room.
That said… you could create an updated dramatic look in this room by using a metallic glaze. You may not want to use this on all walls… it could be a bit overwhelming. It would look great as a focal wall… you will need to choose which wall would be the focus in your room.
This is a very easy project… I mean easy… but you need to do it right, or it will be a mess.
You could choose a silver, opalescent, bronze or gold over glaze. It depends on your decor.
MCCLOSKEY "SPECIAL EFFECTS" METALLIC GLAZE This glaze is perfect for just this purpose. I have included a link to the product information sheet… which includes instructions about the correct application of the product.
Personally… I recommend using the copper faux finish over burgundy paint.

You are wonderful. Thank you so much. That is a great idea. Friends have walls done so that you have to touch it too see if it is suede or not.I was hoping for something similiar, but I like this idea.
Thanks again.
