Kelly gave me a faux painting call for help:
Hi Debra!
I have an outdated kitchen. It has real wood paneling but it has turned dark with age and it is a northern room to begin with.
Along with the oak baseboards and window trim it is just too dark! It is an old country farmhouse with three red barns on the property.
My idea is to paint the paneling to look like weathered red barn siding. I have been searching for tips.
One idea is to paint a gray base then somehow put the red on top? I am unsure how to create the look. I do have a limited experience with faux paint techniques.
Any help would be appreciated.
THANKS, kELLY
Today I sent her a simple solution:
Hi Keylly
I would base paint the paneling a red color, but make sure it is a little bit brighter than what you want the finished red to look like.
Then you can go over it with a darker red / brown glaze. Brush it on with a vertical motion.
You can also use some sand paper and sand off the red in areas to give the walls more of a distressed aged look so that the wood will show through underneath as if the paint has worn off.
Here are a few articles on distressing that might help you.
