Cracked Faux Tuscan Plaster Wall Paint
April 29th, 2008 | Posted in Painting Techniques | CommentsFunny title… Cracked Faux… but it's true. These homeowners want to faux paint their Spanish plaster walls and accentuate the cracks. So I named it Cracked Faux " Tuscan Plaster Wall Paint "
Hi There,
I saw your recommendation regarding Faux on Heavy Plastered walls, but have another question. My wife and I would like to faux over our Spanish plaster walls in a well lite grand staircase area. There are numerous cracks in the plaster that are very long and have been painted over by past owners. We would like to faux the entire area, while highlighting the cracks and other plaster imperfections.
How would you recommend glazing the area to accent the cracks and create that 'rustic' plaster look?
Thanks in advance,
Rick
You want to paint a rustic plaster look on a Spanish plaster wall by faux painting. This will be easy.
First things first. You must… must… paint the entire wall with satin finish paint or primer first. This will give the faux finish a chance to be "even" on the entire wall. If some of the wall is painted with on type of paint and the cracks another… well you are not only going to accentuate the cracks but the paint slapped on around those cracks.
Now… on to the faux painted wall technique. Because your walls already have texture it's very easy to color wash the walls. All those tiny cracks will be magnified by the faux glaze. It catches in any grooves as you are moving the glaze across the wall.
After the faux glaze is dry… if the cracks aren't "cracked" enough, go back over the cracks with the same faux glaze but use a small artists brush to run it along the crack. Blot back any heavy areas with a rag.
This should look wonderful!
