HI Debra,
I have a question, I a friend of mine has just gone to Vietnam to adopt a little baby girl, her husband asked me to surprise her and do the nursery for her.

There neighbors started the project for me and did a river rock technique on the bottom and then they put the first coat of pink on the top above the chair rail, they want it to be stripes with flat and satin of the same color.. since they painted the base coat for me already, I was wondering how you do the measuring for the stripes?

Her husband said he got a 1×8 piece of wood that I could use as a guide, but its been so long since I have done stripes, I wondered what you thought about my taping and all do you use a pencil and make the lines first , then do the tape?

I want this to be perfect, just wondering your thoughts, if you get a chance can you email me back your suggestions??? thanks, Dena

Hi Dena

Isn’t this wonderful? I love this idea!!

Now… because you want the walls to just be shiny and flat stripes, this will be easier!

Several ways of “drawing” in the stripes are available:

  • I use a watercolor pencil for all my drawing on walls. Because it is water soluble… it can be just washed off. That is,as long as something hasn’t been painted over it.
  • Using a laser level can be extremely helpful in getting strait lines. Yes, you can get the lines to go up and down!!!
  • Tape makes the job so much easier! It’s a pain to put up and take off, but the actual painting goes really fast.
  • If you use tape, remember to be extra careful when removing the tape, as it can pull off “all” the paint with it and make a mess.

Instead of using a flat and shiny paint! Paint the entire wall in one finish and then do the stripes in a clear sealer with the other finish. This way you don’t have to worry about bleed under the tape… it wont show!

Boys Bedroom Mural

This is such a cute boys bedroom mural with wallies idea!

I am getting ready to transform my son’s room from Pooh into a “Construction zone.” I bought Wallies with a dump truck, cement truck, and one other truck.

Dump Truck Bulldozer Yellow Trucks Wallies Wall Cutouts

There is a slight angle (about 18″) that connects the ceiling to the main walls. I wanted to use the slanted part of the wall as a structural “border” for the room.
So, I planned on painting the ceiling a pale, pale blue, coming down onto the slanted part of the wall.

I thought that I would try to paint a road, mound of dirt, some grass and clouds onto the 18″ strip that goes the length of the walls and then add the Wallies.

The problem? I can’t even draw stick people!

Assuming that trucks and construction would be a popular theme, I thought for sure that I could purchase some sort of stencil, but have not been able to find one.

One lady that I talked to was trying to convince me that it was SO EASY to draw them freehand. I can’t find any instructions on how to do it. Is there a way to make it “fool proof??” Heather

Simple Construction Mural

The best way to start any painting project is to gather a few pictures from the internet to use as reference. Here is a fairly simple construction mural that I came across on daydreammurals.com. Here is a direct link to the picture: http://www.daydreammurals.com.au/images/gallery/boys9.jpg

The road can be very simple. It will look like a road as long as you have the broken lines going down the center. Mounds of dirt are simple too, just use brown paint - copy how they look in the picture. You may want to add a few simple trees too, in the background.

You will do fine. Maybe you can try it first on a piece of poster board, before attempting your boys wall mural on the walls. When you don’t have any experience with something, it is a good idea to practice first.

Good Luck and Just Have Fun… THAT Painter Lady, Dawn.

We did a mural recently with Bob The Builder Stick Ons… and we wanted it to be very primitive and coloring book style.

This should give you some ideas about how easy it can be to paint a mural with roads, hills, trees and clouds.

And yes… we did paint the bi-fold closet doors to look like and old garage door. The fake wood technique is from the Wood Grain Video.

I hope this is helpful… Debra, THAT Painter Lady.

I was checking online today for some vacations spots and just lucked into finding this page with some really cute ideas for amural, kids room style.

Most of the kids rooms are related to ocean scenes or something tropical in the murals.

Their are 8 different murals pictured… all very different. One of the ideas would be perfect for a princes style room.

You won’t believe the Pirate Bedroom! It would be so easy to created this beach themed mural for your favorite child.
