I’m very partial to the dark furniture and simple iron lamps. I think a man could live with the quote on the wall as art… with all else in the room in perfect symmetry.

If you’re the parent of a teenager, sooner or later the subject of redecorating their “child’s room” will come up. Often much sooner rather than later and certainly more than once!

A teenager’s room should be their “safe space” – their haven. A place they can retreat to and feel comfortable and enjoy. Not so much an adult space, but more “grown up” than a child’s room and with a fun flair to it.

It’ll certainly work out better if you involve your teenager in coming up with a theme for their room. A theme that will help to express who they are (and not what you want) otherwise they’ll end up with a room they don’t like.

You want them to LOVE their new space and enjoy being in there. Let them go through magazines and books and pick out things they like about different rooms.

Let Teenagers Choose The Room Colors

When you start redecorating your teenager’s room, let them choose the colors, but with some guidance. Have them take a look on the internet and see what they can find.

Sometimes redecorating can be as simple as repainting, rearranging, and putting those “kid toys” either in storage (to be found in 12 years and remembered fondly), sold at a yard sale, or given away to your favorite charity. Easy breezy!!

When you’re redecorating a teen’s room, remember that they are very sensitive to color, and they’re much more free with their sense of adventure.

Why not go for using bolder colors on the wall behind the bed? This way you’ll have a great focal point.

Plus, it’ll save on you having to decorate the whole room.

Also, it means that you can include a color in the room that they really like and want, but which will not overpower the room completely.

Change The Curtains For Budget Redecorating

Another simply way to redecorate your teen’s room when on a tight budget is to change the window covering.

Instead of those “farm animal” or “circus” curtains, why not get them blinds instead? Because they come in so many different designs, colors and materials, there should be something they’d like.

Or if you have blinds, how about changing them out with some simple curtains or shades? Sometimes that’s all it takes to change the room up enough to make it feel all new! A pull down shade with some beading or trim glued to the edge and a simple valance and – TA DA! Whole new feel to the room.

Colorful Sheets For A Teenage Room Makeover

Buy some colorful bed linens to bring some pizazz to their space.

Even better, remember changing out those blinds for curtains? Buy some extra sheets, then turn them into curtains, a throw pillow (or two), and/or even a lampshade to match the rest of the décor. You’ll have that designer look with matching sheets, throw pillows, curtains, etc. but at a fraction of the cost!

Replace Floors In Teen Room Redecorating

If you can’t afford to replace a worn out carpet in your teen’s bedroom, opt to have it taken up, and go for low maintenance painted floors with some throw rugs.

If your bedspread is a solid color get a patterned rug. If the bedspread has a pattern get a solid rug. Oooo…and why not include some large cushions they can use when their friends come over? It’ll give them a much more relaxing and friendly feeling room – and a place where they can get away from it all.

Cheap Headboard Idea For Teenager Room

Have a “little kid” style bed? Rather than replacing a perfectly good bed…and by bed I mean mattress set….instead, just get a more adult like headboard for it. An easy “headboard”? A bookcase! Gives them a place to put their “stuff” AND it’s inexpensive! You can either get one exactly the size of the mattress or about two feet wider (I like the wider version).

Just by rearranging your teen’s furniture in their room, you will be able to give it a whole new dramatic look. Many successful teen room makeovers can quickly and easily be accomplished just by changing the layout of a room.

Add in a couple of new accessories and lighting to their room, and BAM – it can help to change the look of a teen’s room dramatically but inexpensively.

Get A Bit Crafty With Fringe

If you want to make a teen’s room look a little funkier, then pick up some fringe or beading from a clearance table at the local craft store or fabric store.

You can then glue this around the bottom edge of the lampshade and the hems of curtains to provide a new look. You could even glue it around the edges of shelves (or use some upholstery type tacks – just not on the lampshade or curtain hems…only on the shelves!!).

And there you have it. There are so many ways in which your teen’s bedroom can be redecorated and not end up costing you an arm or a leg. Not even a knee.

Teenager’s will love it. You’ll love it. Everyone wins!!
